The Importance of Oral Hygiene

We have all been told at some point that the perfect smile involves straight white teeth, so it is something that many of us want for special events and places where pictures are taken.

For straighter teeth, veneers and braces often do the trick. If you want brighter teeth, it can be a little more difficult to achieve depending on your smile. Many drinks, foods, and other activities we indulge in can stain or discolor your teeth.

These can include tea, coffee, soda, red wine, tomato sauce, berry juices, tobacco, and some starchy foods like pasta and potatoes.

It is not a bad thing if your smile isn’t perfectly white, a natural tooth color is slightly yellow! Getting rid of stains can also be challenging, so teeth whitening is a solution many patients choose when they want to remove stains or simply brighten their smile.

Wanting a brighter smile extends beyond just wanting whiter teeth. As with many other aspects of dentistry, your self-confidence affects how you live your life on a daily basis.

Having good self-confidence can completely change your life, it changes how those around you perceive and treat you.

There’s no better way to take a great first impression than to look someone in the eye and smile at them. Whether it’s a job interview or a date, this level of confidence will serve you well.

Two Teeth Whitening Solutions for Oral Hygiene

At Dental Care of Sumner, we offer two teeth whitening solutions for you: in-office whitening and custom take-home whitening trays.

We’ll talk about the take-home trays first, because often if someone is looking to whiten their teeth, then they’ll opt for a drugstore tooth whitening product they can do at home.

While they may be a cost-effective short-term solution, any product you find over the counter won’t match the effectiveness of our teeth whitening treatments.

Take-Home Whitening Trays

Take-home whitening trays probably sound like a more convenient solution than in-office whitening treatment, and that’s why we offer them! The big difference between the two is that take-home trays are more time-consuming, but they can be done at home.

You have to use the trays for two hours a day for up to 2 weeks to get the same level of whitening as our in-office whitening treatment.

For our take-home treatment, we will create custom trays to fit your teeth and also send you home with the whitening gel and detailed instructions on how to use them effectively.

The whitening gel utilizes the same concentration of peroxide but typically has added flavoring or fluoride to improve the taste and lessen sensitivity.

While our in-office whitening treatment requires a bit of time in the dentist’s chair, you only have to do it once instead of every day for over two weeks. With only an hour’s work, your dentist can get you up to 8 shades lighter.

It won’t have additional flavoring or fluoride unlike the take-home treatment though. Our in-office whitening involves your dentist applying a peroxide-based product and using a bright light or laser to enhance the whitening.

It’s often applied, rinsed off, and reapplied several times to get ideal results.

A dentist can also ensure that your teeth match each other and that the whitening is not uneven by performing teeth whitening. Plus, you’ll know the results will be reliable instead of hoping the over-the-counter product works.

Whichever option you decide is best for you if you’re considering teeth whitening, we’re here to help. Book your appointment with us today and we’ll get you that brighter smile you’ve been looking for.
